Combine Masks & Compositing

This tutorial shows how to use a still image as a backdrop texture for a clip.  By using a pattern such as paper, canvas, or stucco, it is possible to give the impression that the clip is being projected onto a textured surface.

Steps

Step 0
Open an iMovie project containing at least one clip of video.

Step 1 Place the clip in the timeline.

Step 2
Create or find an image to use as a texture.

Step 3
Import the image into iMovie.

Step 4
Place the still image in the timeline, after the clip you wish to affect.

Step 5
Double click on the still (second) clip and set its duration to the duration of the video (first) clip.

Step 6
Select the first clip.

Step 7
Choose ss| Combine in the Effects panel.

Step 8
Set the Mode slider to Multiply.  You will see "Op: multiply" in the small preview window at the top right of the screen.

Step 9
Adjust the Image A and Image B sliders as desired.

Step 10
Click the Apply button.

Step 11
Wait for the clip to render.
