This tutorial shows how to make a clip look more like grainy black and white film.  It uses multiple effects, applied one after another, to give the final look.

Steps

Step 0
Open an iMovie project containing at least one clip of video.


Step 1 Place the clip in the timeline.




Step 2
Choose Black & White in the Effects panel.


Step 3
Click the Apply button and wait for the clip to render.




Step 7
Choose ss| Response Curve in the Effects panel and adjust the sliders as desired.


Step 8
Click the Apply button and wait for the clip to render.




Step 9
Choose ss| Film Grain, BW, Positive in the Effects panel and adjust the sliders as desired.


Step 9
Click the Apply button and wait for the clip to render.



Variations

The various effects can combine to produce a variety of looks.  Experiment with various ways of modifying the contrast and brightness of the black and white clip, before applying the grain.

Description Result
Using a slightly higher Amplitude value for the grain.
Using smoother grain makes the film format look smaller, like 8mm format rather than 16mm format.
Using a very high value for the grain Amplitude.
